The World’s Number Two Mobile Memory Manufacturer in 2009
 Hynix New Mobile Memory Strategies
Hynix Semiconductor ("the company") recently announced a target for mobile DRAM sales. Dr. Kim Jong-Kap, CEO, said the company aims to leapfrog Elpida in the mobile DRAM market by doubling its market share from 12 percent in 2008 to 24 percent in 2009. The revenue from the company's mobile DRAM business is expected to rise to 17 percent of its total DRAM revenue in 2009, up 10 percent from 2008, he added.

Hynix is currently ranked 2nd in the mobile DRAM market. However, Hynix plans to be ranked 1st, as we strengthen our mobile core capabilities such as packaging technologies and product performance. To fully satisfy our customers’ need, Hynix will offer highest capacity storage in mobile DRAM products in MCP (Multi Chip Package), and PoP (Package on Package) and will consistently improve performance by maximizing its operating speed while lowering power consumption.

Hynix introduced the world’s first 54nm 1Gb LP DDR2 chip in April, 2009. It features significantly lower power consumption (approximately 50mW lower) than previous generation 1Gb DDR product.

Besides these features, Hynix plans to reduce the product size on future products by providing ‘One Chip Solutions’, which offer flexible options to meet the specific needs of the customers for both SDRAM and DDR DRAM interfaces, and both x16 and x32 organizations on a single chip, all compliant to JEDEC standards.

With its new mobile memory product line, Hynix plans to expand its markets to the next generation MID (Mobile Internet Device), UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC), and NetBook applications. Hynix plans to start mass production of 54nm 1Gb DDR2 in early 4Q, 2009 in order to satisfy the increasing demand for high performance mobile applications.

  Mobile Memory Market Forecast

Despite the overall weakness in the economy, the mobile DRAM market is still expected to ship more than 552M units (1Gb Eq) in 2009 and grow rapidly in 2011 with 52% CAGR (2007- 2011). Mobile DRAM adoption rate is estimated at 67% of all handsets produced in 2009, and expected to increase to 81% by 2010. This attributes to the remarkable growth in Full-feature and Smartphones which require fast and high performance mobile DRAM and NAND Flash in a compact small form factor MCP package.
